Tightly packed lines mean steep ground; wide gaps mean gentle terrain. Learn to see the shape of a valley before you ever set foot in it.
Orient before you move
Line up the map with the terrain in front of you using a compass or two known landmarks, then keep checking as you go rather than after you are already lost.
